Personal Message from Andy Griggs

A Grasshopper’s Lament / Downhill Bluegrass Band (Schweden)

A Grasshopper’s Lament / Downhill Bluegrass Band (Schweden)

Veröffentlicht 9. Mai 2011 ............................ LHM-016

Besetzung: Kennoth Kjellgren (Banjo, voc.)
Jonas Kjellgren (Mandolin, voc., bass)
Kajsa Westin (bass, voc.)
Ivor Ottley (Fiddle)
Nicke Widèn (Dobro)
Magnus Sundström (Guit., voc.)

Track 01 Give it up and give in
Track 02 Reckless wind
Track 03 Silver and gold
Track 04 The Duke
Track 05 Us against the world
Track 06 Red robe
Track 07 A grasshopper’s lament
Track 08 That idiot wind
Track 09 Count me in
Track 10 Crawl back
Track 11 Back in town
Track 12 Talking to a barman
Track 13 Up and down these roads

Die CD ist nominierungsberechtigt zum ACMF-Award 2011.

Johnny Solinger hits with Cool New Music

Johnny Solinger hits with Cool New Music
Rocker Embraces Country Roots
Nashville, TN --- With “Livin’ Out a Country Song,” Johnny Solinger returns with a sophomore country project that tips a hat to the singers’ roots.
The self-proclaimed “redneck from the great state of Texas” is best known as the front man of the rock band SKID ROW, but growing up in Texas, country music has always been close to Johnny’s heart.
“It might seem odd to have such drastic tastes in music,” he says, “but it feels perfectly natural to me.
“Livin’ Out A Country Song” is featured by All Access in the “Cool New Music” section this week. (See http://www.allaccess.com/country/cool-new-music )
The singer´s first country project was released regionally and the single “Too Well To Go To Work” hit the top 20 on the Texas Music Charts, making it to the #16 spot. It´s filled with both sides of Johnny Solinger, Country and Rock. It was a perfect introduction to country fans who may have never heard of Johnny or SKID ROW.
Since the release of that first solo effort, SKID ROW experienced an astounding re-emergence on the world stage, covering all corners of the globe, including China, Australia, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Wales, Sweden, Italy, Mexico, Taiwan, and even Russia. Extensive touring of the U.S. followed, delaying the planned release of Johnny’s second country record. Finally, the wait is over.
“I'm so excited about these songs and this new record that I glow in the dark,” says Solinger. “The first one was never ever meant to be a one and done, throw it against the wall and see if it sticks kind of deal. I LOVE making these records and completely flipping the switch from hard rock back to my country roots.”

International Bluegrass Music Award Winners

Gibson Brothers Take Home Two Big
Trophies–Album and Vocal Group of the Year

And Dale Ann Bradley Lands 4th Award as Female Vocalist of the Year on Heels of
Release of Somewhere South of Crazy

September 30, 2011, Nashville: The Gibson Brothers swept up two of the biggest awards at last night’s 22nd annual International Bluegrass Awards at the Ryman Auditorium, taking home “Album of the Year,” and “Vocal Group of the Year.” The Compass Records duo, Eric and Leigh Gibson, received seven nominations for Help My Brother released in February to chart topping and critical success, establishing them as one of bluegrass’ hottest acts.

"If you keep showing up good things can happen. We're lifers, we don't have a plan B and this is what we do and we feel very fortunate to be doing this for quite awhile now. This is validation for staying in it and not giving out," says Eric Gibson of the wins.

Dale Ann Bradley collected her fourth “Female Vocalist of the Year" award.   Bradley just released Somewhere South of Crazy, praised by The Sunday edition of The New York Times with, “One of the most delicate female vocalists in bluegrass…the highlight is ‘Come Home Good Boy’, and affecting, quietly enraged song about sending a child off to war.” The song is now a music video and will be featured on both CMT.com and GAC.com.

Co-founded in 1994 by musicians Alison Brown and Garry West, Compass is a new breed of roots-music label: eclectic, sophisticated, and artist-friendly. Called “one of the greatest independent labels of the last decade” by Billboard Magazine, Compass Records has provided a thriving haven of creativity for artists and a reliable beacon of quality for music fans.

STEVE MARTIN & THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS NAMED IBMA ENTERTAINERS OF THE YEAR

STEVE MARTIN & THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS NAMED IBMA ENTERTAINERS OF THE YEAR

On the strength of a busy touring schedule, a string of national television appearances and the release of a new album, Rare Bird Alert on Rounder Records, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers took home the Entertainer of the Year award at the 22nd annual International Bluegrass Music Awards Thursday night, September 29 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.  Martin, who always included banjo picking in his early stand-up comedy routines, has become more serious about recording and performing bluegrass music during the past two years, with the release of two albums of original music.

Martin appeared at the microphone to receive the bluegrass music industry’s highest music award, leapt a few times into the air, congratulated the other Entertainer of the Year nominees and jokingly thanked them for losing. He went on to thank producers John McEuen and Tony Trischka as well as his band mates, and then he talked about how hard they’ve been working on their music, as well as the humor and entertainment aspects of their show, while never denigrating the music. Martin said that while half of their audience usually comes to see him not knowing anything about bluegrass, “they all leave loving it, and maybe they seek out other musicians. We’re really, really honored to win this award tonight.”

Steep Canyon Rangers lead singer, Woody Platt quipped, “Working with Steve, we might be the most entertained of all. Most of all we thank Steve for giving us this most amazing ride.”

Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers, a young group based in North Carolina named IBMA’s Emerging Artist of the Year in 2007, played “Me and Paul Revere” during the Awards Show—a song Martin wrote from the perspective of Revere’s horse and performed on national television at the Capitol 4th Concert in Washington, D.C. July 4. There’s always been something a little magic about fiddle and banjo music, and Martin’s deft clawhammer style underscored by Nicky Sanders’ exuberant fiddling and soaring three-part vocal harmony from the Rangers definitely did the trick.

It was an exciting night for New York State-based band, The Gibson Brothers, who took home awards for Vocal Group of the Year and Album of the Year for Help My Brother, on Compass Records.

The Boxcars, a new combination of veteran musicians, were named Emerging Artists of the Year and Instrumental Group of the Year. Band member Ron Stewart tied for Banjo Player of the Year with The Grascals’ Kristin Scott Benson, who received the award for the fourth consecutive year.

Balsam Range received top honors for Song of the Year for “Trains I Missed,” written by Walt Wilkins, Gilles Godard & Nicole Witt. “There are a lot of folks out there—myself included—who are thankful for some of those trains missed and how things turned out,” commented Tim Surrett of Balsam Range.

Legendary artists Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe and Paul Williams took home two trophies for Recorded Event of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance, for “Prayer Bells from Heaven.”   The three announced their plans to record a second Old Friends album, much to the delight of fans in attendance at the Awards Show.

Russell Moore of IIIrd Tyme Out and Dale Ann Bradley took home awards for Male Vocalist and Female Vocalist of the Year—the fourth time for each. Rob Ickes of Blue Highway was awarded his 13th Dobro Player of the Year award, the most trophies any individual instrumentalist has received in the history of the IBMA Awards.

Michael Cleveland was named Fiddle Player of the Year for the ninth time, and his band received the award for Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year for “Goin’ Up Dray Branch,” a song written by Buddy Spicher and Jimmy Martin. Marshall Wilborn was named Bass Player of the Year for the third time, Bryan Sutton received the Guitar Player of the Year award for the sixth time, and Adam Steffey dedicated his eighth Mandolin Player of the Year to his twin sons, who he expects to be born in the next two weeks.

Hosted by legendary mandolin player and band leader Sam Bush, the 2011 IBMA Awards Show were a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bill Monroe, recognized as the Father of Bluegrass.

Sam Bush told a story about how a young musician once approached Bill Monroe and played a tune he’d written squarely in the Monroe style.  The older mandolinist listened carefully and said, “That’s real good. What can you do on your own now?”  The question was answered at the IBMA Awards, as band after talented band hit the stage.

As bluegrass music heads into the second hundred years after its founder’s birth, the genre is stronger than ever—as evidenced by a number of virtuoso level, high energy live performances from The Sam Bush Band, The Grascals, Balsam Range, The Del McCoury Band, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Sierra Hull & Highway 111, Lonesome River Band, The Boxcars, The Gibson Brothers, Dailey & Vincent, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver—later joined by J.D. Crowe and Paul Williams, George Shuffler, Hall of Famer Tom Gray and new Distinguished Award recipient Roland White.

The moment that probably would have made Bill Monroe smile was when White kicked into “Wheel Hoss,” with the next break played in twin harmony by Sam Bush and Ronnie McCoury on their mandolins. Dailey & Vincent thrilled the crowd with triple fiddles added to their usual line-up for “Close By,” and The Grascals brought two young girls from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital who are battling cancer onstage with them to sing “I Am Strong,” a song inspired by the band’s trip to St. Jude.

Ronnie and Rob McCoury inducted their father into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and guitarist James Alan Shelton inducted George Shuffler, the bass and cross-picked guitar stylist known as “the third Stanley Brother.”  The evening ended with a guitar rendition of “Life is Like a Mountain Railway” from Shuffler and Shelton, backed by Gray, and a medley of Del McCoury songs delivered in his trademark, scalding tenor range.

The International Bluegrass Music Awards are voted on by the professional membership of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), which serves as the trade association for the bluegrass music industry. The IBMA Awards Show is the centerpiece of the World of Bluegrass Week September 26 – October 2 in Nashville, Tenn., which also includes the IBMA Business Conference and Bluegrass Fan Fest.
The IBMA Awards Show was broadcast live on Sirius XM Satellite Radio (Bluegrass Junction, Channel 61) and on WSM-AM; the show will be syndicated to more than 300 U.S. markets and 14 foreign networks thanks to the sponsorship of Martha White, Deering Banjos, the International Bluegrass Music Museum, Bluegrass, Moonshine & The Birth of NASCAR – The Movie, Compass Records and the Academy of Bluegrass. Steve Holy - Love Don’t Run (CD Single Review)

Steve Holy - Love Don’t Run (CD Single Review)

Release Date - 21 December, 2011
Label - Curb Records
Writers - Rachel Thibodeau, Joe Leathers, Ben Glover
Time - 3:41
Rating (Out of 10): 7/10

Love Don’t Run’ is the current single for the 39 year old fresh-faced Texan Steve Holy who hails from Dallas. It is the title cut from his album which came out on September 13, 2011. Released by Curb Records they have a policy of not putting out an album until singles have made a significant impact at radio. This explains the reasons as to why it has been 5 years since a project of new songs has finally materialized from Holy who is best known for his smash ballad ‘Brand New Girlfriend’ which after 36 weeks hit the #1 spot.

This new power ballad was written by Rachel Thibodeau (‘I’ll Still Be Me’ and ‘Love Land’ cut by Martina McBride), Joe Leathers (co-wrote ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey’ - Kenny Chesney) and Ben Glover at a Florida song writing retreat in Rosemary Beach. The three drew on their own feelings from long-term marriages to craft a beautiful but honest straight-from-the heart song about enduring the difficult times of a relationship where love can’t hide in the shadows.

Steve with a new found energy teams up once more with producer/songwriter Lee Miller. Colt Cameron from Curb pitched the song to Holy who immediately realised this would be a terrific lead-off single. It almost didn’t happen when it was discovered that Ronnie Dunn had the song on hold but then luckily for Holy’s sake didn’t decide to cut it on his first solo project.

With delicate piano and a softly voice in its opening lines Steve in a somewhat monologue styling offers the words:
This is gonna hurt, this is gonna hurt like hell, This is gonna damn near kill me, sometimes the truth ain't easy, I know that you're scared of telling me something, I don't wanna hear, but baby believe that, I'm not leaving, you couldn't give me one good reason”

Joined by the purr of a Hammond B3, Steve digging deep whilst allowing love to conquer everything despite the obstacles that obstruct its rocky path sings with raw emotion in the chorus:
Love don’t run / Love don’t hide / It won’t turn away or back down from a fight / Baby I’m right here / And I ain’t goin’ anywhere / Love’s too tough / It won’t give up, no not on us / Baby, love don’t run

As the passion intensifies a wispy pedal steel, punchy drums and edgy guitar add bite to the mix. With say-it-like-it-is but not cheesy lyrics Holy is prepared to do whatever it takes to make things work, avoid the easy option, and not let a precious love slip from his grasp as he delivers the lines of the second verse:
Let's lay it on the line, I don't care if it takes all night, This is gonna makes us stronger, it's gonna make forever longer, I know it'd be easier walking away but what we got is real, And I wanna save us, baby we can do it, Baby we'll get through it cause

The production and the vocals tend to a get a little forceful but this can be forgiven when there is so much at stake to loose but then with a tender heart offers a hand and the romantic caring words:
So come over here and lay down in my arms, Baby tell me everything that's on your heart, cause

This song has been a slow burner on the Hot Country Charts and after 37 weeks sits at its current peak position of #19 thus providing his third biggest hit song of his career. It has to date sold around 200,000 digital downloads and the album has debuted at #22 on the Country album charts with nearly 4000 fans taking it home to share.

The video directed by Eric Welch portrays in rather classy English setting a forbidden love where the daughter of a wealthy family is powerless when falling for the charms of a handsome young yard boy.
About Steve Holy
When Steve Holy’s breakout smash, “Good Morning Beautiful,” stood a top the country charts for five straight weeks in 2002, it sparked a fire that has continued to smoulder throughout his decade-long career. But it’s been a slow burn, and a testament to the dogged persistence and unyielding tenacity that Holy has displayed since his first big break in 1993, when he beat out 500 hopefuls in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Johnnie High Country Review, the same contest that launched the career of LeAnn Rimes. It was another four years, however, before he signed with Curb Records, and three years after that, his debut album, Blue Moon, was released in 2000.

Despite moderate success with a couple of top 20 singles, “Blue Moon” and “The Hunger,” it was not until more than a year after its release that the album first entered Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, and Holy was four singles deep when “Good Morning Beautiful” finally reached #1, a full 18 months after Blue Moon launched. The earnest, charming ballad struck a sweet spot with country fans, later being named Billboard’s #10 Top Country Song of the Decade 1999-2009. Lightening did strike twice, but not until 2006, when Holy again reached #1 with the playful “Brand New Girlfriend.” (Read more at

The Carter Brothers Announce The Road To Roosky

The Carter Brothers Announce The Road To Roosky

First Album With Roots Music Label Compass Records Features Sam Bush, Tim O'Brien and Rare Vassar Clements Recording

“Tim and Dan are blood related to A.P., Sarah and Maybelle Carter but they don’t make a big deal out of it. Like their mama, who taught them to rinse collard greens in the Maytag, they make their new old timey music with tried and true ingredients and modern appliances,” says esteemed mandolinist and vocalist Tim O’Brien of his friends the Carter Brothers. Now living north of Nashville, Tim and Danny Reid Carter arrived in Music City with the kind of tight harmony only siblings can claim. Performing to adoring fans for the past two decades, the Carter Brothers are releasing their first album of rocking bluegrass, and their first with Compass, The Road To Roosky, on October 25.

Raised in the Carter Family musical legacy, The Road To Roosky embodies their unique heritage with equal parts of reverence and raucousness.  Their talent on their many instruments – Tim on banjo, vocal harp, mandolin and guitar, Danny Reid on guitar – lends itself to masterful arrangements alongside the drums of Dann Sherill and electric bass of Ross Sermons.

The brothers were also charmed by black gospel and blues music, especially musicians like Blind Willie Johnson. The album covers “Soul of a Man” in a tribute to the style while Tim’s bluesy banjo permeates throughout. “I’ve been playing with my brother for so long and he’s such a blues guitar player that all of that rubbed off on my playing through the years. I wanted to make sure that the banjo on this was not so much about playing Earl Scruggs style banjo but that [the banjo] fit these tunes,” comments Tim. Sam Bush, the patron musician of newgrass music, is featured on many of the tracks, including the traditional tune “Jerusalem Moan,” which became a special collaboration between past and present. Recorded with Vassar Clements a few months before his untimely death in 2005, “Jerusalem Moan” is possibly the only recording that features Vassar singing and scatting as well as playing fiddle.

Additional standout tracks include “She’s a Hurricane,” which features Ferrell Stowe on slide guitar as well as the title track, a story-song about a vagabond with no arms, his dog and the small town in Ireland that the Carter Brothers can’t seem to get off their minds. “Any American that has ever been to Ireland and that has any roots to there gets a feeling that they’ve been there before, it’s eerie. We love that place.” The album rounds out nicely with the bluegrass tune “What Does the Deep Sea Say,” a track that foregoes the drum set for the classic brother duo tradition and features Tim O’Brien on mandolin and vocals.

The Carter Brothers’ music is universal, inspiring fans from California’s west coast, to Florida’s Key West, to the heart of Ireland. Dave McAdams of the Dublin Times praises, “Electrifying and hard driving original rock/folk/blues and newgrass music. Superb songwriters on a level all their own. Stunningly precise musicianship performed with a seemingly effortless and totally joyful demeanor.” Their loyal following shares the sentiment with a fan club that runs merchandise tables and uses their airline points for cross-country tours. “We allowed people to come into our lives and be a part of this, we encourage it. We try our best to go out and make friends and fans along the way. When we were approached to start a fan club, we were hesitant to call it a fan club, we wanted to call it a friends club,” laughs Tim.

Tim and Danny Reid will be on tour promoting the album this fall in Ireland and Key West, FL with dates throughout the Southeast United States to be announced. Their CD release event will take place on October 8th, in Key West at the Hog's Breath Saloon.
